Inside Scotland’s ‘most haunted cinema’ where staff hear voices & shadowy figure roams the halls

WELCOME to Britain’s most haunted cinema – which is ‘stalked by a ghost that walks through walls’ and throws things at customers.

Staff at Moray Playhouse are convinced the movie theatre is haunted after a series of paranormal occurrences.

They say a shadowy figure walks through walls and the toilet door, items fly through the air and disembodied voices whisper in the dark.

A second spook is said to be dressed in the period clothes of a fishwife.

The cinema in Elgin has been the venue for a whole host of ghostly happenings.

General manager Steven Bieszke and his employees have had multiple paranormal encounters in the past few years.

All of these things have been witnessed at the cinema which was built in 1932.

He said: “We have had some spooky goings-on in the cinema in the past few years.”

“Our most recent event involved the kiosk.

”To my surprise, we had three piles of hot cup lids kindly remove themselves from the counter, where they are stored, and landed down in front of the microwave.

“I was in the building myself – nobody else was here at all. I heard the noise and came through, and immediately saw what it was.

“Those cup lids that were on the floor do not get stored anywhere near there.

“Sadly, nothing was picked up on CCTV cameras as it doesn’t cover that area. That was probably two months ago.

“Far more has happened in the past four years as well. I’ve been there, and there have been lots more goings on before my time as well.

‘A shadowy figure came through the door’

“The foyer for Cinema 2 and 3 is where I’ve seen my most impressive spooky situation here.

“I was locking up one night, and came round the corner. Right in front of the gents toilets, a shadowy figure came through the toilet door – actually through the door, the door didn’t move.

”It came out, walked around the corner, and walked into the door on the right hand side to the staff room.

“It’s strange that it’s happened in this corner, because another situation that I had was when I was opening up one morning.

“The door to the cleaning cupboard has all our light switches in here.

”One Wednesday morning, I was opening up, and as soon as I put the key in the door, I heard a voice, clear as day over my right hand shoulder. It said, “are you ready?”

We visit a haunted swimming pool

BY HARRY WILLIAMSON

AS we approach Halloween, we enter the season of spooky tales and ghost stories.

The spook-filled holiday piques an interest in the paranormal and attracts people to some of Scotland’s most haunted locations.

Wanting to experience Scotland’s scariest locations this Halloween, our reporter attended a ghost hunt at a haunted swimming pool.

Paranormal company Haunted Rooms have just started running events in Scotland and invited us along to their Ghost Hunt at the Renfrew Victory Baths, which is said to be one of the town’s most haunted buildings.

The Edwardian building is said to contain the ghost of a young boy who died in the pool, and some have reported seeing a spectral woman in white.

Haunted Rooms were given full access to the historic pool, even to areas off-limits to the public, including the underground maintenance tunnels.

“I instantly got the goosebumps. When you hear things as clear as day, I know I’m not going crazy – but it is a shock to the system.

“Other members of staff have also said they’ve seen and heard things in this cinema.

”They’ve heard stories of people who’ve experienced things here, or they’ve seen and heard things themselves.

“Workmen in the building have also heard noises, especially when cinema 3 was getting built. A lot of stuff tends to happen when there are big changes.”

“I instantly got the goosebumps”

But although these mysterious events have caused goosebumps, they’ve thankfully not caused any greater alarm.

Steven said: “The biggest shock was the shadow through the door, because I actually saw that with my own eyes.

“I had to run downstairs and get help, because I didn’t want to be up there myself!

“But I’ve never once felt threatened. It’s almost as though we’re a part of a family.”
